Official description

CIA-UAP-D001: an Intelligence Information Report (IIR), the CIA's standard format for raw collected intelligence, dated September 1973. The report aggregates several Soviet military accounts of UAP observations and their internal handling, sourced through CIA reporting channels in-country during the late detente period.

Editor's context

The CIA's UAP-related IIRs from the 1970s have been partially released over the decades through routine FOIA, but most have been heavily redacted on source-protection grounds. PURSUE Release 02 includes one specific 1973 IIR in less-redacted form. Its substantive contribution is showing that the Soviet military, like the US military, was tracking and internally classifying UAP encounters during the same period, and that US intelligence was monitoring that Soviet handling.

In the margins

Transcribed redactions, stamps, and handwritten markings, the paratext of the file. Often the most human part of a declassified document, and worth reading on its own.
